a) Hi-end book designers known for their
successful work with other publishers ask a flat price for total book projects. These projects may take multiple months to determine the direction, work with editors, establish grid systems, select type faces, and come up with award winning look for books or series of books |
Textbooks - $ 30,000 - $ 70,000 |
Trade books that have complex visuals may be higher.
b) Standard Textbooks | $ 90 - $ 150 page for design |
plus $ 60 to $ 110 for production
Design direction will often come from client but
the production part will have to make serious corrections to designs for it work. Trade books are first presented to publisher as a "treatment", generally consisting of around 100 pages. If sold, the publisher will provide an advance fee for the full document writing. The complete book must be throughly thought out during this stage and provide enough "sell" to make it viable for a publisher. Ghostewriters that have strong credentials will not take the treatment stage on without at least $10,000. |
